Kappa Search Inc. is a Chicago employment agency that specializes in engineering, manufacturing, technical sales and procurement recruitment and placement. One of our clients is staffing their Advanced Engineering department with R&D engineers as follows:

The Advanced Engineering department develops concept ideas, designs & develops systems, to further increase the product portfolio, working closely with the Application engineering functions (internal customer) to ensure the objectives are agreed & met.

The incumbent must keep abreast of marketplace activities/trends relative to  product portfolio, competitive offerings, and prospective customer applications. This information is utilized to initiate projects to improve performance of existing products or to develop new products to meet changing market requirements.

The incumbent must be a motivated self-starter who has the skills to effectively operate with other members of the advanced engineering team & other functions. This requires constantly developing new skills & knowledge as technology advances, & also remain in tune with the Automotive market trends, legislation & changing technology needs/demands.

The ability to communicate is critical since the incumbent makes presentations to customers, technology conferences & internal forums concerning new technologies, improved products, or applications that have been developed by him/her. Furthermore, the incumbent is responsible for writing comprehensive technical reports for distribution to customers, outside organizations, and other  divisions relative to new products/technologies learned through testing or technical literature/market analysis.

The incumbent is responsible for developing advanced engineering concepts/projects & working  using project/program management known methods.

Will also be responsible for developing Patent application protection for new technologies.

The incumbent keeps his supervisor informed personally on any/all projects in progress on an agreed frequent basis.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Conceptualizes designs, develops & tests new ideas & products / technologies to ensure the business continued technical advantage in the marketplace.
  • Ability to analyze and simulate complex automotive systems including mechanical, hydraulic and electromeachaical systems and controls.
  • Supports development of the business case/plan & market strategy for new technologies, while using established program management tools to control projects.
  • Develops or incorporates new applications/technology/materials/processes to enhance the performance of existing products and/or lower cost where agreed.
  • Ensures that the products being developed perform in a reliable manner in order to maintain consistently high quality products prior to hand-off to the internal customer (Applications Engineering).
  • Includes manufacturing, operations, supply chain & ultimate internal customer (application engineering function) in the new product process to ensure the products meet all key criteria, such as manufacturability, reliability, marketability, cost targets & sustainability.
  • Monitors the marketplace for competitive product performance, possible new technology opportunities/markets/applications, and identifies any emerging technologies to pursue or be concerned for negative impact to competitive position.
  • Acts as a resource/expert for specific competencies & will provide mentoring to other advanced engineering department staff.

Education / Experience

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Eight years experience involving mechanical engine & power transmission development experience for high volume manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of design, mechanical testing, metallurgy, noise reduction practices for mechanical components, tribology (the science of friction, lubrication, and wear), physical properties of materials used in components, and gearing.
  • Masters degree in engineering is advantageous
