Surprising locations make it onto Forbes’ list of the fastest growing information sectors

The No. 1 metropolitan area for growth in the technology industry is Silicon Valley, the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California, area, according to Forbes' list of the fastest growing information sectors. It's employment grew 9.2 percent from 2012 to 2013 and 60.1 percent from 2005 to 2013.

Forbes looked at 55 metropolitan areas that had at least 10,000 information technology jobs, including software, publishing, broadcasting and telecommunication positions. The areas were ranked on job growth in the last two years, since 2008 and since 2002.

Second place is the San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, California, Bay Area and third place is the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Massachusetts, area. The Bay Area's jobs increased 3.2 percent between 2012 and 2013 and improved 32.1 percent between 2005 and 2013, while Boston's information industry expanded 2.5 percent between 2012 and 2013 and 9 percent between 2005 and 2013.

Not surprisingly, the top cities are known as technology hubs, and the Silicon Valley and San Francisco areas each employ more than 110,000 workers in the information industry, according to Forbes. The Madison, Wisconsin, area is the smallest of the top five technology sectors, but is rapidly growing because of medical software creator, Epic, which employs 6,800 workers in a 5.5 million-square-foot campus.

The top technology industry areas may be changing and some surprising locations made it onto the list, such as the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Georgia, area, which ranks sixth, and the Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, Arizona, area, which ranks ninth. Both areas may be up and coming in the technology sector. General Motors opened a software facility in the Atlanta area in 2013 and the Phoenix area created as many jobs as the Bay Area last year, Forbes reported.

Large areas such as New York City and the Los Angeles area didn't make it into the top 10, ranking 13th and 27th respectively.

Expanding businesses with open positions should partner with technology recruiters to find the most qualified and skilled workers for their jobs.
